March 13, 2013 – The night at the Mana Barumsaa Daandii Guddinaa compound was periodically punctuated by downpours.  The region is desperately dry so any precipitation is welcome.  After breakfast with Lensa, our group proceeded on to Dire Dawa.  Along the way we travelled through the Asebe Teferi and Hirna valleys dedicated to the production of Khat.

"Khat, (Catha edulis) is a flowering plant native to the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.  Among communities from these areas, khat chewing has a long history as a social custom dating back thousands of years.  Khat contains a monoamine alkaloid called cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite and euphoria."  Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khat

After signing into the Blossom Hotel (which has the motto "your beauty is our concern") Danny took us on a tour of the city.
